Thought, music, culture, nature - Personal web site of Fred Stoll
Not a very interesting topic, to be sure, but here it is for the record.
I am part of the baby-boom generation, and have lived my entire life in the USA, moving around quite a bit as an adult in pursuit of my career. I have been an engineer professionally, earning degrees at Univ. of Michigan, Univ. of Florida, and Virginia Tech, culminating in a Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics. I briefly considered entering academia, but quickly realized that I was ill suited to it given the long hours and all-consuming lifestyle required of professors, in part because I needed to be present as a parent of my two young children, in part because I crave, and find the value in my life, through variety and adventure. So along with my professional career, I have always maintained my connection to musicianship, to the out-of-doors, to exercise and physical activity, and to family and friends.
At the lead of my parents, I grew up atheist, but at the lead of my grandmother, I have connections to the Unitarian Universalist church, which demands no belief in the super-natural, but which provides a philosophy and moral basis for how we are with each other, and with our planet, which meshes well with my natural inclinations and my sense of social justice. It also provides social community, which many of us lack in the physical community of our immediate surroundings.
Oh well, as I write this it all sounds pretty boring, of interest to no one except perhaps my mother if she was still living. Maybe I’ll expand it sometime in the future.
But I hope some of my writings are of interest to others, and feel free to drop me a line.
